Patient Feeling Board

A communication board for intensive care patients who cannot speak. The patient picks the card matching how they feel, and the system reads it aloud so the person caring for them hears it.

The constraints that shaped the design

It has to make a sound, always. A ward cannot rely on an internet connection, so the system picks a sound source in order of preference — a real recorded audio file, a synthesised file shipped with the app, speech from the internet, then whatever voice the device itself has — and uses the first one available. The user never has to know any of this is happening.

The users are patients and elderly people. Text size adjusts from 85% to 200%, scaling only the cards while the header and controls stay put, so the extra space goes to the content that actually has to be read. The chosen size is remembered for next time.

Patient and carer may not share a language. Cards show text in both English and Chinese, and the spoken language can be set to Thai, Chinese, or English.
