Taking over somebody else's code differs from writing new code in one respect: you have to understand it before you can change it safely. So we always begin by surveying the system and assessing the risk, then recommend what should be changed and what should be left alone.
Before we start
The fastest thing you can give us is access to the source code and the server. If you do not have it, we will tell you exactly what to request from whoever holds it.
If we conclude that rebuilding is worth more than repairing, we will say so and explain why, even though it makes the immediate job smaller.
